Why Finding a Migraine Specialist is Like Ordering Broccoli Beef

The broccoli beef was horrible.  And I should have known that.

You see, I ordered the broccoli beef entrée at a Mexican restaurant.  And it was horrible.

It was almost like eating Mexican food with broccoli in it.  And it wasn't very good.

Some migraine sufferers are trying to find broccoli beef at a Mexican restaurant.

And so it is with migraine sufferers.  They go from doctor to doctor trying to find the source of “broccoli beef”.   They are looking for someone who understands the debilitating headache pain, the sensitivity to light, and more importantly how to find relief.  They are looking for a specialist.  But they don’t know where to look.

Why it is hard to find a migraine specialist.

Migraine specialists are elusive.  And this is why.  The majority of migraine sufferers are seeking relief from the severe, debilitating pain of migraine headaches.  So they seek out doctor after doctor who can help them get out of the pain.  Some begin to feel like they are on a merry-go-round of drugs, trying to find that one magic pill that will help them function normally again.

But they still can’t find relief.  And the search goes on.  Quite often this search begins to feel like the quest for the Holy Grail, never-ending.  Unbeknownst to them they are looking in the wrong place.  It isn’t the pain that they need to find a doctor for.  They need to find someone who understands what migraines really are.

What migraines really are and how knowing this will help you find help.

The search for a specialist will become far easier once you realize that migraines are more than just a really bad headache.  They are a complex, neurological disorder.  In short, there is something wrong with your nervous system.  It isn’t functioning properly.

Knowing that the nervous system controls everything that your body does helps you begin to understand this disorder.  The nausea, sensitivity to light, throbbing head pain, etc. are all from your nervous system, which is not functioning properly.

Rather than finding someone to get rid of the pain, you need to find someone who works with the nervous system.

What to look for in a migraine specialist.

Your search for a migraine specialist needs to be focused on finding someone who:

1.       Can figure out why your nervous system isn’t functioning properly

2.       Understands how to restore the proper function to your nervous system, and

3.       Can help you understand how to maintain the proper function of your nervous system.

Finding your broccoli beef

Broccoli beef is a simple dish.  Broccoli, beef, sauce and specific spices.  You can find it in Chinese restaurants.  If you didn’t know that it was a Chinese dish you would have to try all different types of restaurants until you found it.

Understanding that migraines are a disorder of the nervous system is like discovering that broccoli beef is a Chinese dish.  Once you know that it is a Chinese dish it becomes much easier to find it someone who makes it.

Now that you know what migraines really are, you can begin looking for someone who can help you figure out what is wrong with your nervous system.
